One of the leading causes of dry eyes is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), where the glands that secrete oil into your tears become blocked and atrophied. Our Dry Eye Clinic offers targeted treatments such as RF and IPL to the eyelids where these glands are located. These two technologies promote new collagen production and reduce inflammation, facilitating the healing and regeneration of the Meibomian glands. Healthier Meibomian glands will help to restore proper tear film health and retention.
RF treatment utilizes radiofrequency energy to treat MGD. By gently applying RF to the eyelid area, the heat loosens the clogged oils, promotes new collagen production, and stimulates natural healing, which is essential for stabilizing the tear film. RF also helps with the appearance of fine lines on the eyelids, an appreciated added bonus. This treatment significantly improves symptoms of dry eyes caused by MGD. Our RF treatment includes Meibomian Gland Expression, making sure that as much clogged oil is removed as possible.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment reduces inflammation and stimulates the meibomian glands. It works by applying light pulses to the skin around the eyes, which helps break down gland blockages, reduce the redness and irritation often associated with dry eyes, and improve tear quality and the appearance of the eyelids. IPL is an effective option for patients who struggle with inflammation or clogged glands.
You can benefit from a combination of RF and IPL treatments. This approach maximizes the benefits of both therapies by addressing both the oil production and inflammation, providing more comprehensive and lasting relief from dry eye symptoms. Our combination treatment includes RF, Meibomian Glands Expression, and IPL.
Dry eye treatments are designed to alleviate discomfort and symptoms caused by dry eyes, often stemming from Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), inflammation, or inadequate tear production. Our office combines advanced technologies with targeted care to address these underlying issues. Our combination treatment options include RF therapy with Forma-I, Meibomian Glands Expression, and IPL therapy with Lumecca-I. This comprehensive approach addresses clogged oil glands, improves tear quality, reduces inflammation, and enhances overall eye health and appearance.
Forma-I is a non-invasive radiofrequency treatment for dry eye symptoms caused by MGD. It delivers gentle heat to unclog oil glands, improve circulation, and stimulate new collagen growth. This facilitates the healing and regeneration of the meibomian glands, alleviating the discomfort and irritation associated with dry eyes and stabilizing the tear films. Forma-I also enhances the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and under-eye bags.
Lumecca-I is an IPL treatment that uses light energy to reduce inflammation, rosacea, and demodex mites, easing dry eye symptoms and improving skin health. It also targets pigmentation issues, enhancing the appearance around the eyes and face.
Both treatments can be used individually or together to promote better eye health, improving comfort and reducing symptoms of dry eyes over time. For patients who present with clogged Meibomian glands and minimal MGD, we offer Meibomian Glands Expression, an in-office procedure that gently clears blockages to restore natural oil flow, enhances tear stability, and maintains the health of the Meibomian glands.
When managing dry eye symptoms, lifestyle changes and home remedies can complement our professional treatments. Here are some things that will help:
Over-the-counter artificial tears can help protect your eye’s surface. If you notice irritation or worsening symptoms, using preservative-free artificial tears can help. Please consult our optometrist for guidance if you have any questions.
Extended screen use reduces blinking, which leads to dryness and discomfort. It has become one of the leading causes of Dry Eye Disease. To rest your eyes, follow the 20-20-20 Rule: For every 20 minutes of screen time, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
Applying hot compresses can help with irritation, relieve fatigue, and unclog Meibomian glands to increase oil release. It’s also an excellent way to relax your eyes.
Cleaning your eyelids and lashes will reduce irritation and inflammation caused by buildups or clogged oil glands. Proper lid hygiene can help prevent conditions like MGD, blepharitis, stye, and chalazion and support healthy tear production.
Sleeping allows for rest and repair. 7-8 hours of sleep per night will support overall wellness, including tear production and inflammation control.
Drinking enough water daily helps maintain healthy tear production, as your tears are made up of mainly water. 6-8 cups of water is recommended per day, of course adjust accordingly based on your activity level and health.
Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils or supplements are known to improve tear quality and reduce inflammation. Taking Omega-3 will help improve your dry eye symptoms.
Adding moisture to the air with a humidifier can alleviate dry eye symptoms and improve other dryness-related issues like dry throat or skin.
These simple steps can make a significant difference in your eye comfort and overall health. For professional advice or advanced dry eye treatments, schedule a consultation with our office today!

Both RF and IPL treatments offer lasting relief from dry eye symptoms by improving Meibomian gland function and enhancing tear stability. Regular treatments can help maintain eye comfort and effectively manage dry eye symptoms over time.

Both Forma-I and Lumecca-I are non-invasive, safe, and comfortable treatments that do not require surgery. They involve minimal downtime, allowing you to resume your daily activities quickly after each session.

These treatments help address the underlying causes of dry eyes, such as inflammation and gland dysfunction, leading to improved tear retention, reduced redness, and better overall eye health.
MGD occurs when the glands in your eyelids that produce oil for your tears become blocked or dysfunctional. This can lead to dry eye symptoms such as irritation, redness, and excessive tearing. Treatment options like RF with Forma-I and IPL with Lumecca-I are effective in addressing this condition.
IPL treatment with Lumecca-I uses intense pulsed light to reduce inflammation and stimulate the Meibomian glands, enhancing their function to improve tear quality and retention. This advanced treatment is especially effective for patients experiencing persistent eye irritation or redness due to inflammation, helping to alleviate dry eye symptoms and restore comfort.
Patients over 18 with symptomatic or asymptomatic meibomian gland dysfunction can safely undergo this treatment. There are a few exceptions, such as patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or who have other existing eye conditions.
Yes, you can choose either RF or IPL. However, many patients find that a combination of both offers the most comprehensive and long-lasting results. Please note, IPL is only for lighter skin types.
Our treatment cycle consists of 4 sessions lasting about 45-90 minutes and 2 to 4 weeks apart, depending on the technology selected. Most patients will start to feel and see improvements right after the first session for a few days, and that “feel good” will last longer and longer as the treatment sessions progress.
Ideally, once the Meibomian glands are healthy again and with proper home maintenance, the results will last a long time. Most patients will only need 1-2 maintenance treatment sessions every 1-2 years to maintain the results of the initial treatment.
Lumecca-I and Forma-I treatments are typically considered cosmetic and are not usually covered by insurance. We offer flexible financing options through CareCredit to make your treatment payments more affordable. Please visit our Financing page to learn more about payment plans with CareCredit.
